Marrying three entirely distinct architectural styles into a cohesive and stunning design was the challenge—and opportunity—presented by this unique project.
The main house is a newly built, modern reimagining of New England Shingle Style architecture. Stone foundations and chimneys, along with a flawless slate roof, give weight to the home’s playful lines. A glass connector links the front of the house to a peaceful, stone-clad study.
A modern wood-and-glass connector elegantly ties the carriage house to the newly constructed home.
The carriage house is the only original structure on the property. We restored its historic exterior while transforming the interior into a beautiful, wide-open space for family and guests. In summer, it extends seamlessly to a small swimming pool. Luxurious guest quarters and an impressive office are tucked away on the upper levels.
The buildings surf along—and dive into—the expanse of puddingstone ledge, which was shaped to embrace the house. Care was taken to repurpose original ledge stone in the garden and foundation walls. Heritage plantings, including several ancient trees, were preserved to bear witness to time and add character to the grounds.
The result honors the individuality of both the original and newly built structures while uniting them into a harmonious whole—a testament to the vision of the architects and designers and the skill of our craftspeople.
